Former General Secretary of the Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal’s Dhaka North unit, Azizur Rahman Musabbir, was shot dead in the capital on the night of 7 January 2026. The brutal killing has sparked intense political debate and renewed concerns over the country’s fragile law and order situation.

According to eyewitnesses and police reports, the shooting occurred around 8:40 PM near the Star Hotel in Karwan Bazar, one of Dhaka’s busiest areas. Unidentified assailants opened fire on Musabbir and another individual, Masud Rana, before fleeing the scene. Musabbir was rushed to BRB Hospital, where he was declared dead. Masud Rana is currently receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Musabbir was a prominent BNP activist and had previously contested in local elections. He was known for his grassroots organizational work and had faced several politically motivated charges in the past.

Fakhrul Blames Political Conspiracy

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir issued a strong statement condemning the murder, calling it a “calculated act” meant to destabilize the newly formed interim government.

“This horrific killing is not random. It’s a continuation of repeated violent events designed to corner the interim government,” Fakhrul said in a press release.

He added, “Criminals are once again exploiting the post-uprising political vacuum. After the fall of the authoritarian Awami regime, anti-democratic forces are attempting to create unrest and regain lost ground through terror and chaos.”

Fakhrul called on all sections of society to remain united in protecting democracy and people’s voting rights. “If we don’t stand together, the fascist allies of the former regime will rise again and jeopardize the country’s very existence,” he warned.

Political and Legal Fallout

Musabbir’s murder has intensified fears of renewed political violence in the country. As the incident occurred in a heavily populated commercial zone, the public reaction has been one of fear and frustration. Many have questioned the government’s ability to ensure security, especially during a sensitive political transition.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has launched a full investigation and is reviewing CCTV footage from nearby buildings. Law enforcement officials said a high-powered team has been formed to track the attackers.

Family and Party Demand Justice

In a formal statement, the BNP demanded:

  • Immediate arrest of the assailants
  • A fair and independent investigation
  • Exemplary punishment for the perpetrators

Fakhrul expressed deep condolences to Musabbir’s family, offering prayers for the departed soul.

Musabbir’s killing marks a disturbing trend of violence against political activists — raising questions about the motives behind such targeted attacks and the broader implications for Bangladesh’s democratic stability.
