Iran Strikes US Air Base in Saudi Arabia as War Marks One Month
The Strike on Prince Sultan Air Base
An Iranian ballistic missile, accompanied by a swarm of drones, struck Prince Sultan Air Base — a facility shared by Saudi and US forces located approximately 100 kilometres south-east of Riyadh — on the evening of Friday, March 27. At least 10 to 12 US service members were wounded, two of them seriously, according to reports from Reuters, the Associated Press, and the Wall Street Journal, citing US officials speaking on the condition of anonymity. Several US Air Force refuelling aircraft — including KC-10 tankers and an E-3 Sentry AWACS command-and-control plane — sustained significant damage. The Pentagon declined to comment publicly on the attack.
The strike comes on the same day the war against Iran reached its 28th day. Since the conflict began on February 28 under the joint US-Israeli operation codenamed “Operation Epic Fury,” the Pentagon has confirmed 13 American service members killed in action and more than 300 wounded. Prince Sultan Air Base was targeted earlier in the war as well — Army Sergeant Benjamin N. Pennington, 26, died days after being wounded in a March 1 attack on the same base. Separately, the Saudi Defence Ministry said it had intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile targeting Riyadh itself.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking to reporters after a G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Paris on the same day, signalled that Washington was pressing ahead. He said the administration aims to permanently destroy Iran’s ability to produce missiles and drones, adding that the operation was “ahead of schedule.” Rubio maintained that the objectives could be achieved “without any ground troops,” even as the Pentagon confirmed it was deploying elements of the 82nd Airborne Division and thousands of Marines to the region. CENTCOM commander Admiral Brad Cooper noted that Iranian missile and drone launches had dropped by more than 90 percent since the opening of the conflict — yet the weapons remain Iran’s most effective tool.
Meanwhile, the war’s geographic footprint continued to expand. On Saturday, the Israeli military reported intercepting a missile fired from Yemen toward Israel — the first such Houthi strike of the current war. Israeli strikes hit multiple sites in Tehran described as ballistic missile production facilities, and Lebanon’s Ministry of Health reported 1,142 deaths and 3,315 injured since Israeli operations there intensified on March 2. Iranian counter-strikes have reached Bahrain, Kuwait, and the UAE, with fires reported at two sites in Abu Dhabi after missile interceptions. Iraq has recorded at least 96 killed.
President Trump, speaking at a Miami event backed by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, used the occasion to urge Israel and Saudi Arabia toward the Abraham Accords, saying “It’s now time.” He also extended his deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, after an earlier threat to destroy Iran’s energy facilities if ships were not permitted to pass. Iran’s ambassador to the UN in Geneva said Tehran had agreed to “facilitate and expedite” humanitarian aid through the strait but made no commitment to fully reopen commercial shipping. Trump’s ability to moderate oil market expectations appears, according to analysts at CNBC and Axios, to be diminishing by the day.
Active Fronts — Status as of March 28
Prince Sultan Air Base struck by Iranian missile + drones. 10–12 US troops wounded. KC-10 tankers and E-3 AWACS damaged. Saudi air defences intercepted a separate missile targeting Riyadh.
ESCALATINGUS-Israeli strikes continue on missile factories, launchers, nuclear sites. Tehran residential areas hit. 1,900+ killed (Iran Red Crescent). Industrial facilities in Isfahan struck overnight.
INTENSEIsraeli strikes have killed 1,142 and wounded 3,315 since March 2. 20% of Lebanon’s population displaced. UNICEF: “No safe space.” Multiple shelters for displaced civilians struck near.
CRITICAL~20% of world’s oil and LNG normally transits here — now effectively halted. Iran selectively permitting Indian and Chinese tankers while blocking Western vessels. Trump extended reopening deadline.
BLOCKADEDFirst Houthi missile of the current war fired toward Israel on March 28 — intercepted by Israeli forces. Marks a significant widening of the conflict into the southern theatre.
WIDENINGBahrain facility struck; fire reported. UAE: two Abu Dhabi sites hit by drone fragments after interceptions. Kuwait’s Shuwaikh Port sustained damage — one of the first hits on a China Belt & Road project.
TARGETED“We are going to destroy their ability to make missiles and drones in their factories — and the operation is ahead of schedule.”
— US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Paris, March 27, 2026 (via NPR)The Economic Shockwave — Region by Region
China, India, Japan and South Korea receive over 80% of Hormuz-transited oil. Japan relies on the Middle East for ~90% of its crude. South Korea activated a 100 trillion won ($68bn) market-stabilisation programme. China is using strategic reserves to cushion short-term supply.
Critical ExposureOECD cut the UK’s 2026 GDP growth forecast to 0.7% — down from 1.2%. Europe gets 12–14% of LNG from Qatar through the Strait. Oxford Economics warns that $140/barrel oil for two months would push the eurozone, UK and Japan into contraction.
High RiskThe US imports relatively little oil through Hormuz but faces inflation pressure. Goldman Sachs raised US recession odds to 25%. The S&P 500 has fallen for five straight weeks — its longest such run in nearly four years. California petrol prices surged above $5/gallon.
Stagflation RiskImport-dependent nations in South and Southeast Asia — including Bangladesh — face the sharpest burden. Fertiliser prices have surged alongside fuel. The WEF notes asymmetric shocks that “disproportionately burden” import-dependent economies already carrying high debt.
Severe BurdenKey Escalations — Last Seven Days
Iranian missiles strike residential areas near Dimona in southern Israel; dozens of Israelis wounded.
Adm. Brad Cooper states Iranian missile and drone launches are down more than 90% — yet attacks continue.
OECD raises global inflation forecast to 4% avg. for major economies; UK GDP growth cut by half a percentage point.
Prince Sultan Air Base hit by Iranian missile + drones; 10–12 US troops hurt; KC-10 and E-3 aircraft damaged.
Houthis fire first missile toward Israel in this conflict — intercepted. War has now formally spread to a fifth front.

The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway — approximately 34 kilometres at its narrowest — between Iran and Oman. In 2024, roughly 20 million barrels of oil and oil products transited it every day, representing approximately 27% of global seaborne crude trade and 20% of the world’s total LNG supply. China, India, Japan and South Korea are its primary users. Since early March 2026, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has declared the strait functionally closed to Western shipping, triggering the International Energy Agency to describe it as the “greatest global energy security challenge in history.”
