California Governor Gavin Newsom has announced a formal investigation into TikTok, accusing the platform of deliberately suppressing content critical of former US President Donald Trump.
Speaking at a press conference in Sacramento on Monday, the Democratic governor said multiple complaints indicate that videos questioning Trump’s immigration policies and economic reforms were restricted or removed without clear explanation. Citing reports from users and independent researchers, Newsom said the issue appears to follow a consistent pattern rather than being an isolated technical error.
“This does not look like a simple system glitch,” Newsom said. “What we are seeing raises serious concerns about freedom of expression on digital platforms operating in California.”
TikTok had previously described the issue as a “system failure,” but the governor said that explanation was insufficient given the volume and consistency of complaints.
How the Investigation Will Proceed
The investigation is being conducted through the California Attorney General’s Office. Authorities will examine:
- TikTok’s algorithms and content-moderation policies
- Compliance with the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA)
- Possible violations of state anti-discrimination laws
If violations are found, the platform could face financial penalties, mandatory transparency reports and potential restrictions on its operations within California.
“Californians expect digital platforms to remain neutral when it comes to political expression,” Newsom said.
TikTok Responds
TikTok, owned by China-based ByteDance, has denied the allegations. In a statement, the company said a technical glitch in its recommendation engine last week affected some content visibility.
A TikTok spokesperson said, “We are committed to fair and unbiased content moderation. The issue has already been resolved, and claims of political bias are unfounded.”
However, TikTok has previously faced scrutiny and potential bans in the United States and other countries over national security and data privacy concerns.
Political and Legal Implications
The move is expected to further intensify tensions between Big Tech companies and US political institutions. Notably, Trump has previously praised TikTok for helping him reach younger voters, while accusing platforms like Meta and X of left-leaning bias.
Legal experts say the investigation could set a new precedent for state-level oversight of social media platforms, especially amid ongoing national debates over Section 230 protections and digital free speech.
What Happens Next
The investigation is expected to conclude within 90 days. California officials have pledged to provide regular public updates. Meanwhile, TikTok users in the state have been encouraged to report suspected content suppression through the app’s feedback tools.
