The future of artificial intelligence may soon move beyond Earth. Elon Musk’s SpaceX has submitted a proposal to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) seeking permission to launch up to one million solar-powered satellites, effectively creating orbital AI data centers in space.
According to the filing, these satellites would use near-continuous solar energy to train AI models and process data directly in orbit, bypassing Earth’s growing power constraints and reducing carbon emissions linked to massive terrestrial data centers.
Why Space-Based AI?
Global data centers already consume enormous amounts of electricity and water. Studies estimate that by 2035, AI and data centers could demand up to 1,700 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity annually, placing severe strain on national power grids.
SpaceX argues that orbit offers unique advantages:
- Near-constant access to solar energy
- Natural radiative cooling in the vacuum of space
- No need for water or air-based cooling systems
- Reduced environmental footprint on Earth
The company describes the concept as “planet-independent computing infrastructure.”
Technology and Cost Strategy
The project relies heavily on SpaceX’s Starship rocket system, designed to carry hundreds of tons per launch and to be fully reusable. If Starship achieves its cost targets, analysts say orbital infrastructure at this scale could become economically viable.
Some experts describe the initiative as a step toward Kardashev Scale Type II capability—where a civilization can harness energy at a stellar scale.
The orbital computing power is also expected to support future expansion of Musk’s AI venture, xAI.
Concerns and Risks
The proposal has raised significant concerns:
- Earth orbit currently hosts around 15,000 active satellites
- A dramatic increase could heighten the risk of Kessler Syndrome, where cascading collisions make orbit unusable
- Astronomers warn of increased light pollution and space traffic congestion
SpaceX says it will deploy advanced collision-avoidance systems and ensure automatic deorbiting at the end of satellite lifespans.
Will the FCC Approve It?
Approval is far from guaranteed. While SpaceX previously received authorization for large-scale Starlink deployments, regulators often reduced proposed numbers. Competing projects, such as Amazon’s Project Kuiper, have faced repeated delays.
Still, given SpaceX’s track record, many observers believe partial approval is likely.
Global Implications
For developing and AI-ambitious countries, including Bangladesh, orbital computing could eventually unlock access to high-performance AI without dependence on fragile national power grids. However, access, pricing, and governance will be decisive factors.
An unprecedented technological leap—or a new space safety challenge—SpaceX’s proposal is widely seen as one of the boldest bets of the AI era.
