Panic Buying Empties Chittagong Petrol Stations as Middle East Fears Grip Bangladesh
Queues stretching for hours, dozens of pumps running dry, and demand two to three times normal levels — Chittagong’s fuel network is buckling under panic-driven buying, even as the government insists supply is adequate.
Anxiety over Middle East tensions has triggered widespread panic-buying of fuel across Chittagong, Bangladesh’s main port city, leaving dozens of filling stations without stock by Saturday. At Gani Bakery, Muradpur, and Lalkhan Bazar, long tailbacks of cars and motorcycles formed outside stations with little or nothing to sell. The Apollo-11 pump on Love Lane shut entirely after exhausting its reserves, with staff confirming the tanks were completely empty.
The government has repeatedly assured the public that national fuel inventories remain stable and that no shortage exists at the supply level. Fuel rationing measures introduced earlier in the week remain in force, but demand at the pump has so far outpaced the rules. Experts warn the crisis is behavioural, not logistical — driven by fear rather than any actual disruption to Bangladesh’s supply chain.
“People who normally take 10 litres are now taking 20. Motorcyclists who took 5 are now taking 10. This is not a real shortage — it’s a psychological crisis created by fear.”

On the Ground: Area by Area
Motorcyclist Siraj Uddin described queuing for over an hour simply to purchase two litres of fuel: “I went to several stations — most were closed. Standing here for an hour for two litres is a massive waste of working time.” Pumps in the Wasa and Panchalysh areas have also suspended operations after failing to receive timely depot deliveries, and staff say reopening remains uncertain.
- Apollo-11, Love Lane — stock depleted
- Wasa area — temporarily closed
- Panchalysh — limited supply
- Muradpur — long queues, low stock
- Fuel rationing policy in force
- Supply declared adequate — repeated assurances
- Depot distribution ongoing
- But demand pressure remains uncontrolled
Affected Areas at a Glance
| Area | Pump Status | Wait Time | Situation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Love Lane (Apollo-11) | Fully closed | — (no stock) | Critical |
| Muradpur | Open — low stock | 45–60 min | Severe pressure |
| Gani Bakery | Partially open | 30–45 min | Concerning |
| Lalkhan Bazar | Long queues | 30+ min | Concerning |
| Wasa / Panchalysh | Temporarily closed | — (reopening uncertain) | Critical |
Will the Situation Normalise?
Analysts describe this as a “fear-driven crisis” — the underlying supply chain appears intact, but public confidence has broken down. Unless authorities can reassure consumers and curb panic behaviour, the pressure on pumps is likely to persist for several more days. The pump owners’ association warns that stations which have run dry cannot reopen until depot deliveries resume, creating localised bottlenecks even if national reserves hold.
